Will’s Restaurant Totnes (20 min) 0871 4744 178
The restaurant's main business is dinner, and menus make impressive use of Devon's rich larder for a line-up of modern European dishes. A tian of Brixham crab might be served as a starter with avocado and gazpacho jus, or you could plump for pan-fried scallops with smoked venison and caulfilower purée.
Main courses promise plenty of alternatives to fish: whole roast quail is stuffed with wild mushrooms and served on boulangère potatoes with crispy pancetta and quail jus, while pan-fried duck breast comes with pommes purée, lemon thyme and leek ragoût and a citrus jus. Local cheeses rub shoulders with desserts such as strawberry and cracked pepper parfait with spearmint salsa or brioche bread-and-butter pudding.
On the ground floor is an easy-going café serving morning coffee, baguettes and light lunches along the lines of smoked haddock with a risotto of chorizo, mussels and prawns.

The Turtley Cornmill Avonwick (29 min) 01364 72488
The Turtley Cornmill has recently been smothered with loving attention! Three months of renovation have introduced oak & slate floors, bookcases, old furniture and loads of local pictures. The style is light and fresh with no music, fruit machines or pool tables, just newspapers to read, books to browse, good food, great local beers and interesting wines.

The location is idyllic; the original Mill is set in six acres of grounds bordered by the river Glazebrook, we even have our own small lake complete with an island, perfect for sunny days and idle wandering!
Our menu changes daily and features much local produce but the menu you can read here is fairly typical and is available from 12:00 midday until 21:30 daily.

We love wines too and have an interesting and reasonably priced range from all over the world; not clever wines just good honest ones with a bit of character. We also love beer and our cellar has a good range of regional and local beers, most from brewers that know us well. When you know who has brewed it somehow it tastes better! Our main beer comes from Summerskill’s just down the road, supported by beers from the Princetown Brewery on Dartmoor and others who share our pleasure.

Burgh Island Bigbury on Sea 39 min 01548 810514 www.burghisland.com
For the past three years, Chef Conor Heneghan has brought a new and exciting standard to the kitchen at Burgh Island. Our menu changes daily and is dictated by that morning’s market. The building blocks of our menu are bought locally: from award winning local cheese makers (Loddiswell goats’ cheese), duckling and poultry from Crediton, grass fed, free range Aune Valley beef and pork, Plym Valley venison, Kitley Estuary oysters, shell fish from nearby Kingsbridge-based Brittania, and of course daily line-caught fresh fish from Brixham. A twist is provided by the exotic ingredients, which we source through the internet (Mount Fuji for Japanese foods, Brindisa for Spanish produce) and monthly trips to the Oriental supermarket in Plymouth (KW Foods). Seafood features at The Pilchard Inn with Sushi nights a speciality during the summer. A typical Japanese tasting plate might feature: Panko pork steak, enoki mushrooms in Hondashi broth, yellow fin tuna sashimi, pickled ginger and seaweed salad, scallop dumpling, asparagus sushi roll The Pub otherwise serves robust English food, freshly produced in our hotel kitchen (home made baguettes and soups at lunchtime, casseroles, curries and barbeques in the evenings). At the hotel, relaxed dining at lunchtime in the Ganges Room or on its beach front terrace (£30 per head) gives way to the glamour of the candle lit Ball Room at night (£45 per head, included in the tariff for resident guests). A sample dish might be: Spiced duck breast, fondant potato, steamed greens, sesame duck sauce, or Grilled deep sea bass, green tea noodles, enoki mushrooms, lobster, pak choy, hondashi broth or King prawns, shaosign pork belly, glass noodles, green mango, cashew nut and chilli salad or Seared halibut, pinenut, raminos peppers, tomato, wild garlic and preserved lemons with cauliflower cream; or Duck leg terrine, spiced aubergine, red onion and coriander dressing. Our desserts are delicious, always including a light option of sorbet or fresh fruit with delicate Sabayon. Classical puddings are given a contemporary and lighter feel, such as our classic Lemon curd crumble soufflé

Memorably and accurately described as a shabby beach hut, The Winking Prawn is a much loved landmark on the North Sands Beach at Salcombe. Slightly eccentric, utterly relaxed and extremely busy, the Winking Prawn is open seven days a week in summer from 10.30am till 11.00pm. Out of season it’s open at weekends, half term and holidays. It’s so much fun to eat there that the garden is often full to its capacity of 180 and inside seats 60. Part of the fun is dressing up from the owners fancy dress chest and joining in the fun to create a great atmosphere.

The Union Inn (67 min) Moretonhampstead
Since acquiring The Union Inn, Moretonhampstead Dave Coleridge and his partner Sian Hughes have been quietly implementing a programme of renovation over the last year. The most important was the refurbishment of the cellar and bar equipment. This he says, has led to an improvement in the quality of beer being served which on our last visit was Bass, London Pride, St Austells Dartmoor and Tribute. All drinking beautifully. Its not only real ale that they sell but very reasonable priced bar meals such as Beef & Real ale sausages, onion sauce and mashed potatoes and if you are not a red meat eater (god forbid) then try their pork and cider. The meats are locally sourced by local butcher Barry Moore who makes the sausages with Dave supplying the real ale. Watch out for his beer & banger festival in the late Autumn.
